BACKGROUND AND CONTEXT

Mental health and drug addiction are challenges for penitentiary systems all over the world. The purpose of this project was to tackle these issues in Turkish prisons and to bring the country’s penal services into line with international and European standards.

CONCRETE RESULTS AND OUTPUTS

• A new system for diagnosing and evaluating inmates established to identify those with mental health problems. • New models developed for treating prisoners with mental health and drug addiction problems. • Prison staff and officials directly interacting with prisoners trained to operate a screening and evaluation system used for the first time in Turkey. • A sustainable model established for training prison staff, raising their awareness of mental health issues, changing their attitudes toward mentally ill prisoners and supporting their own mental health. • Cascaded training delivered to 500 psychologists and prison staff from prisons all over the country, disseminating information about the new systems and intervention programmes
