BACKGROUND AND CONTEXT

This project was a component of the Regional Competitiveness Operational Programme which is part of the Instrument for Pre-Accession and is designed to support Turkey’s convergence with the EU by increasing the competitiveness of the Turkish economy and reducing regional socio-economic disparities. The project was designed to provide Turkish entrepreneurs with the capital, infrastructure and space facilities needed to develop their businesses and to encourage the exchange of experiences and ideas between similar institutions and organisations, thereby strengthening the local economic and business environment.

CONCRETE RESULTS AND OUTPUTS

The centre encouraged the growth of entrepreneurship by promoting the establishment and development of regional and national enterprises. We established and trained a strong management team to run the centre, drawn from key, local people with long-term involvement in the project, and developed a genuine feeling of local ownership in order ensure the centre’s financial sustainability in the future. Requirements set out in the project’s terms of reference regarding the involvement of young women entrepreneurs were exceeded: compared with the target set of 25%, 10 out 23 tenants (or 43%) were young women entrepreneurs under the age of 29.
