BACKGROUND AND CONTEXT

Despite laws being passed in the 1990s to eliminate discrimination against women and a law to protect survivors of domestic violence being enacted in 1998, the country lags behind in implementing its national and international gender equality commitments. Women in Turkey continue to face challenges, with gender-based violence a major concern. The project aimed to ensure Turkey’s full compliance with the human rights standards set out in the international instruments to which the country is party, thereby protecting Turkish citizens and civil society as a whole.

CONCRETE RESULTS AND OUTPUTS

• Communication and coordination between THRI and the boards improved. • Standard procedures for recording human rights complaints established. • The capacity of the boards to deal with human rights violations increased. • Implementation of human rights standards monitored. • Awareness and capacity of board members to deal with women’s rights issues and violations increased. • Project activities and outcomes disseminated widely through a highly promoted festival of short films, nation-wide TV spots and publication of numerous guidelines, booklets and materials.
