BACKGROUND AND CONTEXT

After the positive vote of the Turkish Cypriot community in the 2004 referendum to reunite the island, the European Council decided to end the isolation of the Turkish Cypriot Community and facilitate its integration with the EU. Therefore, the purpose of the project was to improve socio-economic conditions in rural areas in the northern part of Cyprus while protecting the environment and developing the sustainability of natural resources. To achieve this goal, the EU introduced several grant schemes in various sectors and established a programme management unit (PMU) to manage them.

CONCRETE RESULTS AND OUTPUTS

The PMU supported the preparation and conclusion of grant contracts carried out by various bodies, including municipalities, unions, foundations, associations, and CSOs in Northern Cyprus. Through the PMU we provided support to grant beneficiaries and their projects through several capacity-building workshops and promoted the grant scheme and the projects supported by it through various visibility activities. Thanks to these projects, the Turkish Cypriot community had been able to apply the acquis (the body of common rights and obligations binding on all EU Member States) and enhance alignment with the EU in the sectors mentioned above.
